In 1324 Mansa Musa Emperor of the Mali Empire embarked on a pilgrimage to Mecca that would go down in history as the most expensive single journey ever undertaken. He brought with him sixty thousand men twelve thousand enslaved servants five hundred of his own personal slaves each carrying a staff of solid gold and eighty camels each loaded with three hundred pounds of gold dust.

The Richest Man Who Ever Lived

Historians and economists who have attempted to calculate Mansa Musa wealth in contemporary terms consistently arrive at figures in excess of four hundred billion dollars making him the wealthiest individual in all of recorded human history. For context that exceeds the combined net worth of every living billionaire on Earth today.

How the Mali Empire Was Built

The Mali Empire rose to dominance in the thirteenth century following the defeat of the Sosso Kingdom at the Battle of Kirina in 1235 by Sundiata Keita the founder of the Mali Empire. Sundiata built the foundations of a state that would control the three most valuable commodities of the medieval world gold salt and the trade routes that connected sub-Saharan Africa to the Mediterranean and beyond.

Timbuktu City of Gold and Knowledge

Under Mansa Musa the city of Timbuktu became one of the most important centres of learning and commerce in the known world. The Sankore Madrasah housed over twenty five thousand students. The city produced more manuscripts per year than any other city outside of China. The University of Timbuktu predates the University of Oxford.

The Legacy

The Mali Empire declined after Mansa Musa death in 1337 but its legacy endures. The manuscripts of Timbuktu the gold trade routes the administrative systems that governed millions of people across millions of square kilometres all testify to a sophistication and scale that most of the world has never been taught to associate with medieval Africa. That is the story PannaAfric exists to tell.
